When Sarah Frances Bryan was born on March 29, 1862, her father, Henry, was 26, and her mother, Mary, was 21. She married Major John Barrett Broadfoot on October 15, 1885, in New Bern, North Carolina. They had four children during their marriage: Mary Norcott, 1886-1972, William Gillies, 1887-1961, Frances Bryan, 1890-1960, and Henry Bryan, 1893-1980. During their marriage, John and Frances moved to Black Mountain, NC and ran a boarding house. Frances was quite active in the surrounding community. Many friends and relatives escaped the heat of NC summers visiting with the Broadfoots in Black Mountain. She died on January 17, 1950, in New Bern, North Carolina, at the age of 87, and was buried there.
In 1924, Sarah “Fannie” Bryan traveled by herself to Europe on what she called “My Great Adventure.” Her journal the trip has since been published. During her travels, she chose to visit her husbands family the Broadfoots in Wigtonshire, Scotland. Here is some of her narrative:
