William Gillies Broadfoot 1806 – 1872

When William Gillies Broadfoot was born on March 5, 1806, in Amelia, Virginia, his father, Charles, was 31 and his mother, Purify, was 26. He married Frances Rebecca Wetmore on February 3, 1842, in Cumberland, North Carolina. They had ten children in 23 years.

Charles Wetmore 1842-1919, William Wilson 1843-1864, George Badger 1844-1885, Thomas Wetmore 1850-1890, James Baker 1853-1882, Andrew 1855-1930, Francis (Frank) Hinsdale 1857-?, John Barrett 1860-1931, May Catherine 1861-1875, Elizabeth Hinsdale 1866-1866.

He died on March 18, 1872, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, at the age of 66, and was buried in Cross Creek Cemetary. Based on his obituary, he was in the banking business for around 40 years. He served as a teller, a cashier, and a United States Pension agent. During the Civil War he was a worked as a depository for the Confederate States. In 1866, WGB received a presidential pardon from Andrew Johnson for his involvement in “the Rebellion against the government of the United States.”

His son Charles Wetmore Broadfoot served in the Civil War and some of his correspondence has been documented by another historian on the blog “The Charles Wetmore Broadfoot Letters, Aide de Camp to gen. Theophilus H. Holmes.” Contained within are descriptions of the Broadfoot family home as well as notes from both William Gillies Broadfoot and Frances Wetmore Broadfoot.
