Charles Broadfoot was born on AUGUST 17, 1774 in Pustrie, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Based on information from Hometown Heritage, by Lucille Johnson, Charles emigrated to the United States via Petersburg with two business friends, Freeland and Gillies in 1787. **Note: This is where the Gillies name becomes part of our family story. Charles settled in Amelia County, Virginia.

Based on the Virginia marriage records, Charles married Purify (Peurefee. Purefee, Purifee) Barrett Booker Wilson in November of 1796. She was born August 24, 1779. Her father was Major Tom B. Wilson and her mother was Puriffee Barrett. Together Charles and Purify had 8 children over the course of 10 years. Purify died on September 26, 1807, in Amelia, Virginia, at the age of 28.
Following his wife’s death, Charles moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina, joining his brother Andrew. Andrew was an active Fayetteville citizen and a Charter Member of the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry.
Charles lived the rest of his life in Fayetteville. He died June 3, 1833.
